Request a Chicago Police Case Report

For a Chicago Police Department case report, use CPD’s report-request process. CPD guidance says members of the public may request a case report and explains that reports are reviewed before release to remove investigative or other sensitive information. Helpful details include the reporting/victim name, incident type/location, and RD number.

How to interpret chicago police report results

CPD’s official request guide identifies the Chicago Police Department Records function as the source for a case report.

Federal FOIA is not the route for a Chicago municipal police report; DOJ guidance directs state/local records to the government that maintains them.

A step-by-step route for chicago police report

  1. 01
    Identify the CPD report

Use the RD number when available.

  2. 02
    Submit through CPD Records

For a mailed case-report copy, send the RD number, victim/reporting person’s name and address, incident type and occurrence address to Chicago Police Department, Records Division, Customer Service Section, 1st floor, 3510 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60653. CPD’s currently hosted case-report notice specifies a $0.50 check or money order payable to “DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE - CITY OF CHICAGO” and a self-addressed stamped return envelope. This fee is for the case-report copy described in that notice, not every type of police record.

Case incident reports can also be requested in person at the Records Section in the main lobby of Public Safety Headquarters at the same address. Check CPD’s Records & Procedures page for service-specific counter hours before traveling; its counter schedule differs from the hours printed in the case-report notice.

  3. 03
    Read released copy in context

CPD says reports are reviewed and sensitive/investigative portions may be removed before release.

This locality page uses the municipal Chicago Police Department as the police-report custodian. It does not route a Chicago police report to a county simply because Chicago is in Cook County.
